Shmaltz Brewing Co. is continuing a mission -- now in its second year -- to produce beers that tie in to the classic "Star Trek" series of TVs and movies.

It started last year a few years ago with a very limited beer called Vulcan Ale: The Genesis Effect. Last year, the brewery marked the 40th anniversary of the debut of the original TV series with a golden ale named for one of the most beloved early episodes, "The Trouble with Tribbles." (The beer was made with the grain called triticale, since quadrotriticale doesn't exist -- yet).

Then came brews named Voyage to the Northeast Quadrant and, earlier this year, Klingon Imperial Porter.

This summer, Shmaltz is marking the 30th anniversary of the follow-up series, "Star Trek: The Next Generation," with a hoppy wheat beer called Symbiosis. It's described as a "smooth, easy-drinking ale with prominent wheat maltiness and distinct flavors and aromas of Warrior, Centennial, and Amarillo hops." It's 5.5 percent alcohol.

Symbiosis, named for a Next Generation episode, made its debut in July at the annual Comic Con in San Diego. It's a limited edition beer now available in 4-packs (bottles) and on tap.

Shmaltz Brewing is best known for its "beer with shtick" themes -- it's "The Chosen Beer," after all. Its brews include Hop Manna IPA, Messiah Nut Brown Ale, Slingshot American Craft Lager and a complex barrel-aged sour ale called Funky Jewbelation. The company has been making beer since 1996, but didn't open its big brewery in Clifton Park, north of Albany, until 2013.

Shmaltz is the only brewery with a "Star Trek"-licensed tie-in, but it's not the only Upstate New York brewery licensed to make beers in conjunction with a popular TV series. Brewery Ommegang in Cooperstown has been making beers themed for the HBO series "Game of Thrones" for several years.
